Apple’s iOS 26 Phone App Gets a Major Overhaul with Smart Call Screening

Apple’s latest operating system update, iOS 26, has brought a significant redesign to its core Phone app, introducing features built to tackle one of the most persistent nuisances for smartphone users: unwanted calls. The overhaul isn’t just cosmetic — it fundamentally changes how incoming calls from unknown numbers are handled, putting more power in the hands of users to manage their communication experience.

The standout upgrade is a robust call screening system, which automatically answers calls from unsaved or unknown numbers without ringing your phone. Instead, iOS prompts the caller — via an automated message — to state their name and the reason for the call before the phone ever rings. Once the caller provides that context, the recipient can decide whether to accept the call, silence it, or send it to voicemail. This approach aims to filter out robocalls, spam, and other unsolicited contacts, reducing interruptions while still allowing legitimate callers to reach you if needed.

In addition to the screening feature, Apple has organised other call management tools in more accessible ways. Users can choose between options such as “Never” (regular ringing), “Ask Reason for Calling,” or “Silence” for all unknown numbers, giving granular control over how unknown calls are treated. There’s also wider integration with the Phone app’s interface: filtered voicemails and unknown calls can be sent to designated lists, while business and spam identification tools help flag suspicious contacts.

This update reflects Apple’s broader focus in iOS 26 on enhancing communication and privacy features, alongside design and interface improvements to make the OS feel more modern and user-centric.
