WhatsApp is set to stop working on several older smartphones starting June 1, 2025, as it updates its minimum software requirements. The Meta-owned messaging platform has raised its operating system standards, which means devices unable to meet these requirements will lose access to WhatsApp’s messaging and calling features.
To continue using WhatsApp:
iPhones must run on iOS 15.1 or later
Android phones must run on Android 5.1 or newer
Phones with older software will no longer be supported.
iPhones affected include:
iPhone 5s
iPhone 6
iPhone 6 Plus
While iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, and SE (1st gen) have been mentioned, they remain compatible if updated to the latest supported iOS.
Android models affected include:
Samsung Galaxy S4
Samsung Galaxy Note 3
Sony Xperia Z1
LG G2
Huawei Ascend P6
Moto G (1st Gen)
HTC One X
Any Android device running version 5.0 or earlier will lose WhatsApp support.
On iPhone: Go to Settings > General > About > iOS Version
On Android: Go to Settings > About Phone > Android Version
Checking your device’s OS version ensures it meets WhatsApp’s requirements.
According to Meta, WhatsApp regularly reviews supported devices to focus on improving performance, security, and features for current platforms. Older devices often lack necessary security updates and critical functionality, making it harder to maintain support.
Users are strongly advised to upgrade or switch devices to avoid service disruption and continue using WhatsApp seamlessly.
