In a major digital revamp, India Post will begin using artificial intelligence to sort letters and parcels from July 7. The initiative, aimed at improving speed and transparency, is part of an ₹5,785-crore project approved by the central government in January 2022, slated to run for eight years. The current upgrade will be completed in three months.
The AI-powered system will streamline postal and parcel handling, making it easier to track registered, speed post, and parcel deliveries. India Post Savings Bank services will also become more transparent as part of the overhaul.
In larger cities, AI tools such as optical character recognition (OCR) will decode handwritten addresses and match them to delivery routes. The system can group items by the postman’s area, ensuring efficiency. While AI takes over routine tasks, human staff will still play a crucial role, with chatbot support also being introduced.
India has 1,54,965 post offices, 87% of which are in rural areas. Mobile systems have already been deployed for postal, financial, and insurance services in these locations. With this latest digital transformation, India Post hopes to offer faster and better service while maintaining its human touch.
