IT services giant Infosys has terminated an employee at its Bengaluru campus for allegedly recording a female colleague inside the office washroom, the company confirmed in a statement. The shocking incident has raised serious concerns about workplace safety and privacy within corporate India.

Infosys, in its official response, reiterated its zero-tolerance policy toward any form of harassment, adding that it supported the complainant throughout the process and continues to cooperate with law enforcement.

“We are aware of this incident and have taken necessary action against the employee, who is now separated from the company. We also promptly supported the complainant by facilitating a swift complaint with the law enforcement authorities and continue to cooperate as they investigate further,” the statement said.

“Infosys is committed to providing an environment free of harassment and has a zero-tolerance policy. We take every complaint related to any violation of the company’s Code of Conduct seriously,” it added.

Employee caught red-handed, arrested by police

According to police, the accused — identified as Swapnil Nagesh Mali, 28 — was caught after the female staffer noticed suspicious behaviour and discovered she was being filmed. The woman, along with her husband, approached the Electronic City police station and lodged a formal complaint on Monday.

Police acted swiftly and arrested Mali the same day. During the investigation, authorities reportedly found 30 obscene videos of women in the company’s Electronic City campus on the accused’s device.

Investigators are now looking into how long the accused had been engaging in this behaviour and whether other women were unknowingly recorded.

“We are investigating the full extent of the offence, including identifying all victims, examining whether more videos exist, and determining how long the accused has been recording women in private,” a police official told the press.

Workplace safety under scrutiny

This incident comes as a grim reminder of the challenges faced by women in professional environments and the need for robust preventive and reporting mechanisms.

Workplace harassment experts have underscored that corporates must remain vigilant, reinforce surveillance where necessary, and ensure employees feel empowered to report inappropriate conduct without fear of retaliation.

Infosys, one of India’s largest IT employers, emphasized in its statement that it takes every complaint seriously and is committed to fostering a safe workplace for all employees.

What’s next?

As the investigation continues, police are expected to conduct forensic analysis of Mali’s device and determine if the videos were shared or distributed beyond personal use.

Authorities have also urged any other potential victims at the workplace to come forward. The company, meanwhile, has assured it will fully cooperate with authorities to ensure justice and provide support to those affected.
